The street to acting in films - Essay Example Presently obviously there are a few on-screen characters who don’t need to take that long street because of family associations as of now in the business. There are numerous streets to take in acting which one an individual picks decides the result. Moving toward the long street ahead in acting it’s in every case great to encircle oneself with similarly invested people. In the event that nobody in the field of life fits that job, at that point look somewhere else as examples of overcoming adversity from other hopeful on-screen characters who got fruitful. The case may not really be a hopeful entertainer yet somebody who set objectives for their life and achieved them. Here’s some exhortation on achieving objectives from a fruitful business visionary, Lately I’ve saw a significant separate in the objectives individuals have for themselves and the plans they have for accomplishing those objectives. Having objectives is a significant advance towards living de liberately, however it’s just one stage. There are numerous different things you’ll need to do to accomplish those objectives. I’m apprehensive that a few people are under the feeling that defining objectives is the most significant advance in accomplishing objectives. As though in the wake of defining objectives, the remainder of the subtleties will â€Å"work themselves out.† That just isn’t valid. Defining objectives is extremely just a little advance towards accomplishing your objectives. In the middle of the two will be a lengthy, difficult experience and heaps of difficult work. (Barr) Preparing oneself for a profession in acting takes a position of regardless, achievement is the main alternative. The confirmation of that choice is the manner by which an individual positions him/herself and with whom. Now and again people may get jobs and stupidly acknowledge a job that is a â€Å"bad look†. The â€Å"bad look† job presently has marked them to the universe of makers, chiefs, specialists and individual entertainers. In the â€Å"bad look† case an on-screen character who had been given an open door pick an inappropriate job and now should work significantly harder to demonstrate or to evacuate the â€Å"bad look†. There are such a large number of provisos to address decorum in the realm of acting. All of which remember choices for chiefs, specialists, contents, and identifying with general society. A hopeful on-screen character ought see a fantasy and tail it as well as ought to assess the stuff to arrive and get ready. Groundwork for the terrible and the great is vital in the street to acting in films. Arrangement is significant. There are stages an individual must take to guarantee a correct street to a profession in acting. Making all the strides doesnâ€℠¢t mean it will occur without any forethought. The significant point here is finding a way to be on the correct street. Readiness isn't for the time being either. Arrangement requires significant investment and exploration. The primary thing an individual ought to do is position themselves in the film network. Hollywood isn't the main spot actors’ act. Most urban areas have their own film network. In the event that not, at that point discover where the closest city is that has a film network and drive out there. Get included see what’s going on. Associate with other yearning on-screen characters, make-up specialists, hopeful movie executives, makers, and so forth. Start where you are first and afterward branch out. A few people settle on the decision to begin in LA. Beginning at the top simply like at the base accepts the same amount of difficult work and penance. Area doesn’t make the street simple; it’s the penance, inspiration and difficult work that m ake the street open. Acting classes are brilliant methods of strolling down that street to

Since this class contained time, assets and openings in bounty, it didn't need to get stressed with respect to their pay and consumptions and so forth. Therefore, the class was required to devour cash, take food, drink wine, make fun and cheer itself through beguilement and recreational exercises. Eminent English artist of Classical Era Alexander Pope has likewise explained the party making exercises of the first class layer by depicting the everlasting character of the hero Belinda in his distinguished Rape of the Lock. The historical backdrop of antiquated societies of Greece and Rome depict the rulers and sovereign as constant to dissemination and unethical exercises while making the most of their recreation hours (Blond, 2000). Planned And Emergent Strategy For Business And Marketing Planning Essay

Planned And Emergent Strategy For Business And Marketing Planning Essay Planned And Emergent Strategy For Business And Marketing Planning â€" Essay Example > SIMILARITIES AND CONTRAST BETWEEN SCENARIO PLANNING AND COMPETING ON EDGE. (2006)INTRODUCTIONThe global business in contemporary era is characterized by keen competition and dynamic nature of conducting the day to day business. Hence, there is the need to curve a niche for an organization before it gains competitive advantage over its rivals. It then requires that the adoption of a more effective and pragmatic strategy is germane in attaining this height. Strategic management which entails how an organization adapt in its environment by the adequate utilization of its resources in meeting its sets goals and objectives, is a significant management techniques adopted in modern organization management in the effective attainment of set targets. The uncertainties that are facing business organization are further intensified by the dynamic nature of conducting business operations. Thus, there is a need to enforce the management of change through an effective strategic technique. Strate gic planning is an invaluable tool in the hands of managers of businesses, in meeting the challenges of uncertainties and stiff competition in the business industry they operate in. In this instance, Brown Eisenhardt (1998:4), defined strategic as basically consisting two things: deciding where you want your business to go and figuring out how to get there”. There are many models of strategic planning; thus applying the right one for the right organizational problem would result in the maximization of optimum result. This essay tends to compared and contrasts between strategic framework, i.e. Scenario Planning and Competing on Edge. These strategic approaches would be compared on how effectively they are in maximizing the result expected in a given period of uncertainty. Also, the differences in the two approaches would be given looking at their advantages and disadvantages. CONCEPTUALIZATION OF TERMSScenario planning: Scenario planning is considered as a tool for businesses in different industry in coping with the unpredictability, and gives insights to them in finding better solution for the future problems as they arise. Rigland (1998:12), defined it as “scenario are often thought of as a management development tools as a way of creating shared vision, as well as better plans in organizations”. To Shoemaker (1991:549), scenario is defined as a script- like characterization of a possible future presented in considerable detail, with special emphasis on causal connections, internal consistency, and concreteness. Thus, corporate planning, make use of multiple scenarios to characterize the range within which the future is likely to evolve. Scenario planning is used not only in investment and portfolio management, it also involve the creation of foresight and developing an international perspective for the organization. It is an adequate tool for planning for uncertainties and brainstorming towards seeking ways to handle a foreseen problem. Drawing a b oundary or sphere of applying scenario planning, Wack (1985), cited in Shoemaker (1991: 550), argues that “scenarios are not states of nature or predictions. The focus is not on forecasting the future, or fully characterizing its uncertainty, but rather on bounding the uncertainties”. Competing on the Edge: ‘Competing on Edge’ is a modern strategic technique use in the management of change that occurs in an organization. According to Brown Eisenhardt (1998:4), competing on the edge is defined as a strategy which entails the creation of a relentless flow of competitive advantages that, taken together, form a semi coherent strategic direction. Competing on the edge acknowledges the key driver of superior performance as the ability to change. And success is measured by the ability to survive, to change, and ultimately to reinvent the firm constantly over time. Thus, competing on the edge is a strategy more pragmatic in the management of unpredictable and uncontrollable dynam ics of modern business. “The underlying insight behind competing on the edge is that strategy is the result of a firm’s organizing to change constantly and letting a semi coherent strategic direction emerge from that organization. In other words, it is about combining the two parts of strategy by simultaneously addressing where you want to go and how you are going to get there” (ibid: 7)

Short Story - 1476 Words

Alex stood in her room, her own personal prison, looking out the floor length windows that overlooked the glittering city of Dallas. Afternoon sunlight streamed into the room, turning her auburn hair gold and casting long shadows across the room. She knew she needed to get dressed, Hunter would be livid if she made them late to his own dinner but it was like she was frozen. Her back still burned from the lashing yesterday. When was this going to end? Alex asked that question a lot more these days. Hunter swung the door open, his mouth curving into a smile as he admired Alex. Morality Oppressed By Religion Or Born From It - 849 Words

Morality: Oppressed by Religion or born from it? â€Å"Morality as Anti-Nature† is a piece written by a German philosopher by the name of Friedrich Nietzsche. A majority of Nietzsche’s works attacked the idea of religion, especially that of Christianity. He believes that humans are essentially good, that morals are instinctive, and we have a natural process of learning how to be moral without the rules put in place by religion. In his piece â€Å"Morality as Anti-Nature† he makes his point that religion is an unnecessary oppressor that is only for the weak willed. He discusses how religion specifically attacks â€Å"passions† and how religion strives to eliminate them completely. I believe that Nietzsche has a point that yes there are negative aspects of religion, but religion is important to the development of morals and the eradication of it would leave the world spiraling downward into a chaotic mess. â€Å"But the attack on the roots of passion means an attack on the roots of life: the church is hostile to life† (Nietzsche. Page 348). Nietzsche states this because he wants to make a point that in his mind religion is toxic and aims to destroy life itself. In this quote he is talking about how religion attacks passions, and believes they should be completely eradicated, when essentially all it is doing is setting a moral boundary for people to follow. Nietzsche believes that humans are essentially good and don’t need an oppressive structure to interfere with the natural course of humanShow MoreRelatedSocial Work s Journey As A Profession And Its Resulting Values913 Words   |  4 PagesIn order for a person to develop a set of values they must analyze their lives and determine what is important to them. Steve Jobs Leadership Free Essays

Some would say that Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computers Inc. , was an exceptional leader. However, there are many who would disagree with that statement. We will write a custom essay sample on Steve Jobs Leadership or any similar topic only for you Order Now Jobs could define leadership in some aspects, yet he fell short in others. Jobs’ leadership style is difficult to pin down because his position fit very many styles. Steve Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976 and in 1984 he created the Macintosh, the first small computer with a graphic interface. Unfortunately in 1985 Jobs was forced to leave after an internal power struggle with the companies CEO. Jobs later returned to a struggling Apple after 12 years and turned the company around. During the 12 years he was away, Steve Jobs created successful companies such as Pixar and NeXT. Pixar was acquired by Disney and NeXT was acquired by Apple Computers upon Jobs’ return. Jobs created such technological staples as the Ipad, Ipod, and Iphone. Steve Jobs was also known for his excellent speeches and captivating his audience. Unfortunately in 2011, Steve Jobs lost a long battle to pancreatic cancer. The characteristics of a superior leader are not hard to identify. Drive, integrity, self-confidence, and knowledge of business are characteristics of an exceptional leader. All of the above described Steve Jobs. Jobs was a very driven man, not for money, or power. Jobs believed that power is a necessity for what actually drove him: achievement itself. Jobs’ persistence was shown even more after leaving Apple. Steve could have spent his life dwelling over his loss, but instead he created two new, very successful companies. Maybe this drive is why Forbes named Jobs 2007’s most powerful person in business. Integrity was important to Jobs; his drive would push him to live up to what he promised. At times, following through with his promise would not always come out in the â€Å"nicest† way. Jobs was known to be difficult to get along with, especially in team meetings. Steve Jobs’ self-confidence was over flowing and considered arrogant by some, but he always believed in what he was trying to accomplish. Jobs’ knowledge of his business was extraordinary, revolutionizing technology at every turn. One of Jobs’ greatest quotes on leadership is â€Å"Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower† (Jobs, 2006). Steve Jobs’ leadership style is very difficult to clearly identify. Jobs’ characteristics and traits sporadically fit into different leadership styles. Jobs would be classified as an autocratic leader, he tells people what to do, asserting themselves, and serving as a model team member. Jobs was definitely not a democratic leader, it has been said that Jobs hated team meetings and was rather rude when employees spoke their mind. Steve Jobs could also be classified as entrepreneurial, despite the fact that he is a multibillionaire, his work ethic never changed. Andrew Dubrin defines an entrepreneur as â€Å"someone with a strong will for achievement and a sensible risk taking, high degree of enthusiasm, tendency to act quickly on opportunity, being impatient, visionary, amongst others† (Dubrin, 2010). Dubrin’s definition describes Steve Jobs to a tee. A transformational leader is one who â€Å"brings about major, positive change for the group, organization or society† (Dubrin, 2010). Jobs’ leadership showed many similarities to a transformational leader except one, Jobs lacked the humane qualities necessary. Jobs’ could also be considered a charismatic leader. Steve’s exceptional ability to captivate his audience during a speech is the time his charisma can be clearly seen. Jobs could fit himself into whichever scenario necessary to reach his audience. Steve Jobs is such an exceptional businessman, leader, and innovator. I have enjoyed learning more about his leadership and his career. Jobs has made me realize that there is no cookie cutter style of leadership that one person can follow. I found it helpful to relate different leadership styles to an actual person. To have a detailed explanation about how the text about leadership changes into real life is useful. He has made me open my eyes to the possibility that no one leadership position is more effective than another. Jobs was not necessarily the warmest of bosses yet he was still able to find that personal connection with his customers. Steve Jobs was able to interest and excite the consumer to have his latest â€Å"miracle. † Not every leader is great at everything, even the best struggle with certain aspects of their leadership. For me, I can see how the lessons that I have learned in my research will apply in my future. I have learned not to ever give up, always keep your eyes focused on the goal ahead. No matter how big or small the project is, the end goal is the same; success. Steve Jobs’ ability to rise above disappointment or despair and move on with such drive to succeed is extraordinary. This drive has motivated me to want to strive for the same. Steve Jobs has given me the examples of leadership that shows that how a strong leader can revolutionize the world. Think of how many homes have Iphones, Ipads, Ipods, or any other Apple product in their home. The products have become the â€Å"norm† in many homes. What a feeling of accomplishment Steve Jobs’ must have felt. All of his hard work and ingenuity is shown in the excitement his customers show with his inventions. I would consider Steve Jobs to be one of the most effective leaders that I have had the pleasure of researching. Being able to overcome being pushed out of the company that he co-founded is unbelievable. Only to later come back to that company and be able to turn around the sinking company. What a display of true leadership Steve Jobs showed the country. Steve was able to show not only his fellow Apple employees but everyone in the world how drive and perseverance can inspire anyone to reach for the stars. References Bateman, . Snell, . (2009). Annie Leibovitz. Research Paper free essay sample

As I am beginning to realize, the saying among the photography department is true- if you are not Annie Leibovitz, you will not be known until you are dead. For example, one of my favorite photographers is Diane Arbus. She had compiled vast amounts of work throughout her career. Unfortunately, all of her works were found in a locker after her suicide and then she was seen as an artist. To summarize what I am saying is that the only famous photographers are dead ones and all the successful ones are barely known. So in order for this research paper to even have the possibility of making it it to four pages, I am going to have to choose the cliche (yet greatly talented) photographer, Annie Leibovitz. Annie Leibovitz is not only the most well-known female photographer, but she is also the most well-known photographer of our time. She started working with Rolling Stone magazine in its early days and she is primarily known for her celebrity photographs and her ability to capture the essence of her subjects. Born Anna-Lou Leibovitz on October 2, 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut; she was the third child of six. Her mother, Marilyn Leibovitz, was a modern dance instructor of Estonian Jewish heritage (Leibovitz). Her father was a lieutenant colonel in the U. S. Air Force which forced the family to move around frequently- including spending an extended amount of time in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. It was there in Vietnam that Annie took her first photographs. In high school, she dabbled in music and writing but in the end, attended the San Francisco Art Institute where she studied painting. Although she was studying painting, she kept photography as her primary hobby. After she graduated in 1969, she volunteered at a kibbutz for several months. Something about her time spent in Israel sparked her interest in photography to a greater extent and in turn, after returning to the U. S. , she decided to go into photography as a career (Leibovitz). In 1970, Rolling Stone magazine was just starting up and looking for photographers. Annie was lucky enough to snag the job and three years later, Jann Wenner, the publisher of Rolling Stone, made her chief photographer of the magazine; a position that she held for 10 years until 1983. In 1975, against the warnings of Jann, she decided to embark on the Rolling Stones Tour of the Americans 75. Her work from the tour is phenomenal and really kick-started her career as a professional celebrity photographer. Unfortunately, one can only imagine what kind of things you are exposed to when hanging out with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, hence; as Jann had warned her, after the tour ended, Annie had to check herself into rehab. She continued working for Rolling Stone, and in 1978, was the first woman to photograph Joan Armatrading (Leibovitz). On December 8, 1980, she had a photo-shoot with John Lennon and promised him that the photograph would make the cover. Originally, the photograph was going to consist solely of John Lennon, however; he insisted the Yoko Ono be in the photograph with him. Annie agreed and was later quoted saying, What is interesting is she said shed take her top off and I said, Leave everything on- not really preconceiving the picture at all. Then he curled up next to her and it was very, very strong. You couldnt help but feel that he was cold and looked like he was clinging on to her. I think it was amazing to look at the first Polaroid and they were both very excited. John said, Youve captured our relationship exactly. Promise me itll be on the cover. I looked him in the eye and we shook on it (Leibovitz). Five hours after the photo-shoot, Mark David Chapmen shot and killed John Lennon, making Annies photograph the last professional photograph of him- in the end, it made it to the cover of Rolling Stone. After the death of John Lennon, she began seeking out other jobs aside from Rolling Stone magazine. Her work with bright, bold colors in the 80s got her a job at Vanity Fair magazine. In 1987, she won an award for her photographs of celebrities that were used in an international American Express advertising campaign (Leibovitz). In 1989, Annie met Susan Sontag and fell in love yet neither of them chose to be open about the details of their relationship. In her autobiography, Annie stresses how much an effect Susan had on her work and herself as an artist- noting her as a mentor who constructively criticized her work. In October of 2001, at the age of 52 through artificial insemination , Annie gave birth to a daughter named Sarah Cameron Leibovitz. Three years later, Susan Sontag passed away. Unfortunately, around the same time, Annies father and mother also passed away. There is speculation that these three consecutive events is what ultimately sent Annie into a downward financial spiral. After the Miley Cyrus photo-scandal in 2008, Annie borrowed $15. 5 million from Art Capital Group- putting up multiple homes and the rights to all of her photographs as collateral. In 2009, the company opened a $24 million breach-of-contract lawsuit against Leibovitz. The New York Times was quoted saying one of the worlds most successful photographers essentially pawned every snap of the shutter she had made or will make until the loans are paid off (Hatch). In 2010, Colony Capital helped her eradicate her debt in such way where she would not have to give up the rights to all her photos. Unfortunately, one month later, that company filed suit against her, claiming she owed them several hundred thousand dollars for assisting her with her debt. Finally, in December 2012, she put her famous New York townhouse up for sale at $33 million- claiming it was so she could spend more time with her daughter (Hatch). Despite Annies fall from financial grace, she is still recognized as one of the best American photographers of all time. Her photographs had the ability to capture the essence and personalities of all her subjects. She has photographed everyone from John Lennon to Whoopi Goldberg and Miley Cyrus and regardless of what new stars arise in the future, Annie Leibovitz will always be the photographer of the icons.

Affirmative Action Creates Unfair Playing Field essays

Affirmative Action Creates Unfair Playing Field essays Affirmative action is a controversial topic in society among all races and genders, and is a topic of dispute in almost all aspects of life, in work environments, in colleges and universities around the nation. Affirmative action attempts to put and end to discrimination but the policy also creates discrimination. It is praised for making universities and places of work more diverse and cultural, while others who feel discriminated against and who feel that they are not being viewed on the same scale as other employees and or students of a different race curse it. Affirmative action is a contradicting and hypocritical policy. The policy is outdated and should be taken out of effect in all aspects of society, especially colleges and places of employment. Being accepted to college or receiving a employment position should be reserved for those most qualified, regardless of their race or ethnicity. In 1964 when affirmative action was first put into place, it was intended to assist African Americans who had been fighting for civil rights. It helped African Americans receive equal employment opportunity.(Froomkin, Washington Post) At this time the policy was very much needed. Blacks had been freed from slavery over a hundred years earlier but still faced many forms of racism and were unable to receive equal opportunity. Affirmative action was a policy that was able to address this oppression. The Executive Order stated that companies that wish to bid on federal contracts must follow the guidelines set by affirmative action and keep a required a number of minorities employed.(Philbrook) Affirmative actions initial intentions were set up to help those on need, but affirmative action has now evolved into a system of meeting quotas. Affirmative action in the working environment discriminates against majorities and leaves qualified employees out in the cold because of their background and color of skin. If two applicants were app...

Abortions Should be banned Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Abortions Should be banned - Term Paper Example Basically, abortion refers to the process of terminating pregnancy as a result of various reasons (Wharton, 1989). Abortion in medical science is a process in which doctors, with the approval of the pregnant women, kill the foetus in order to terminate the pregnancy. â€Å"Abortion is the intentional termination of a pregnancy after conception† (Head, n.d.). However, the concept of abortion varies from country to country and it is seen as controversial in that some countries have legalized it while others prohibit it. The controversy about this topic mainly emanates from the fact that abortion is considered to be a moral issue which is often viewed as wrong by different people from different parts of the globe. In some countries, abortion is illegal while it is recognised in certain countries. Thus, the most controversial issue in abortion is determination of whether the fetus is a person or not. Supporters of abortion believe that a foetus is not a person and a woman has full right on her body whereas opponents of abortion believe that fetus or embryo has life in it and killing a fetus is same like killing a human. Against this backdrop, I am anti abortion since I view it as immoral given that it involves termination of life which is wrong. Gerrard (2009) states that, â€Å"Abortion is one of the most divisive topics in healthcare.† Abortion is not considered good in most parts of the world because of different religious and social pressures. Kelley (2010) asserts posits to the effect that, â€Å"Within the Roman Catholic Church, teachings and leaders commonly oppose abortion.† Also in Islamic countries, abortion seems to have no place. For instance, in Iran as well as other developing countries, intentional abortion except for some special cases is regarded as illegal as a result of social and religious beliefs (Shahbazi, 2011). There are various ethical issues associated with the act of abortion, which prevent a woman from ending her

The methods used in examining the research question include theoretical and empirical approaches. The theoretical approach is used since the method involves a theoretical system that analyzed reasons why baseball players’ market failed to be productive. On the other hand, an empirical approach is used since the method involves existing elementary econometric tools and data that determines the progress of market for baseball players to determine the research objective. The core conclusion the authors reached in their research is that baseball players’ market was ineffective in the beginning of 21st Century because of improper evaluation of aptitude and skills.   The thing they did exceptionally well is stating ways field of sports economics can maximize their profits and advance their performance (Rosner & Kenneth, 361). Three Day Road Essay

Elijah and Xavier were always the best of friends. From the day they met at Residential School, they started to bond, and had a connection as strong as two brothers. However, they were eventually split apart, as Xavier had decided to fulfill his role as a bush Indian, and left with his Aunt Niska to live in the wilderness. When years had passed, Xavier got lonely, and the only person he wanted to have by his side was Elijah; thus, their friendship was rekindled. Now, many years later, they still have not left each others side. They consider each other as brothers, and yet, Xavier ends up killing Elijah. In the book Three Day Road, it is clear that Xavier enables Elijah’s actions before and during war that lead to Elijah’s eventual death, causing Xavier to fall ultimately responsible for Elijah’s death. Without Xavier, Elijah would not have succeeded in war. He learned how to shoot, hunt and have killer-instinct from Xavier, turning him into an eventual heartless k illing machine. The first example of Xavier being responsible for the training of Elijah comes from the first scene in the book, when both boys are out together for the first time. After hunting and effectively catching a marten, they suspect it to be dead.As they walk closer to the Marten, it is clear to both characters that it is still quite alive and struggling to break free from the trap that Xavier and Elijah had laid. Panicking, Elijah says: â€Å"What do we do, Xavier? † (2) Xavier quickly responds, without hesitation, by running towards the nearest log he can find, and brutally smashing the marten to death with it. Elijah, in shock, is told that it had to be done by Xavier. He believes him. It is clear that the first example of brutal violence that Elijah was exposed to before the war was both with and produced by Xavier. This one moment is what provoked eventual quotes from Elijah in the novel, such as: â€Å"Killing is in my blood. † (236). Without Xavier, Eli jah wouldn’t have known how to kill an animal, let alone a man, therefore causing the battlefields of Europe to be no place for Elijah Whiskyjack. Xavier is a naturally quiet and passive person, which ultimately resulted in always allowing Elijah to continue on with his inhumane actions during the war. â€Å"He seems to be spending more and more time with Grey Eyes, but I don’t ask much of it† (Xavier, 124). Elijah stating that, â€Å"Scalping Fritz feeds my unger† (312), and sharing that, â€Å"I know you don’t like what happens next, so I won’t give you the details† (Elijah speaking to Xavier about scalping, 286). Each of these quotations are examples in the book of Xavier hearing or witnessing something Elijah saying or doing. Xavier sees Elijah doing things morally wrong all the time, and consistently does nothing about it. He doesn’t even utter a word. When Grey Eyes started spending time with Elijah, Xavier automatically assumed that Elijah wouldn’t try morphine, as it ‘isn’t in his nature’ to do such a thing. He did. When Xavier noticed the scalps piling up in Elijah’s army bag, he feared that something was wrong with Elijah. He feared even more when Elijah stated that scalping Fritz fed his hunger. But surely, thought Xavier, Elijah would not become Windigo; he did. As it is clear to see, Xavier did not voice his opinion at important stages in Elijah’s life. Perhaps if Xavier had simply told Elijah that Grey Eyes was not only a bad influence on him, but a bad person in general due to his heavy morphine use, Elijah would have listened to him and not hung around with Grey Eyes, and never become addicted to the drug.Maybe if Xavier had forced Elijah to stop scalping and take a breath from reality, Elijah would have realized that he was getting out of hand and stop taking Fritz scalps altogether. This way, he never would have turned Windigo. As you can see, ther e are two clear times in the novel where Xavier should have been a true friend and voiced his opinion towards Elijah about his problems, but not once did he do so. This caused Elijah to not see any problems with the things that he was doing or even realize what a terrible person he was becoming. It could have all been prevented.Xavier affected not only the events leading up to Elijah’s death, but literally was the one to kill him. In fact, he attempted to kill him twice. The first time was in an army tent. When Xavier suspected Elijah to be sleeping, he pulled out a needle filled with morphine from Elijah’s army kit. He plunged the needle into one of Elijah’s larger veins, but ended up not going through with the injection, as Elijah woke up confused, asking Xavier what he was doing. Xavier quickly responded, saying that he was giving him morphine, and then â€Å"slowly pulled the needle from Elijah’s arm and placed it back in his kit† (323).This at tempt of killing Elijah went miserably wrong, and caused Elijah to question whether or not he could trust Xavier as a friend anymore. It is clear that Xavier did not have the best track record with Elijah at this point. He trained him for War at a young age and did not speak out about both morphine addiction and scalping enemies. Furthermore, he attempted to kill Elijah with morphine, fearing that he had gone mad. By not going through with killing Elijah in the first place, it lead to him having to deal with him one on one in the middle of a crater on the battlefield (368-372).Elijah, knowing that Xavier would have killed him the first chance they were alone, planned to jump Xavier in the crater. Xavier, at this point, had no choice but to kill Elijah; the war machine that he himself had created. He ended up succeeding in this, only to find himself in a hospital days later. The all-out fight to the death between two best friends could have gone either way, however, it never should h ave occurred in the first place. If only Xavier had made different decisions in respect to Elijah as their friendship progressed, the death of Elijah never would have occurred. Xavier is ultimately responsible for the death of Elijah.

The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber - 1508 Words

Analyzing Gender Norms in â€Å"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber† In Hemingway’s short story, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, we begin with the married couple, Franics and Margaret Macomber, on a safari in Africa with a man named Robert Wilson. Francis is shown to be a coward when he shoots his first lion twice, but is too afraid to finish it off even though it may be suffering. Margaret is very displeased with her husband’s cowardice and shows her contempt by berating him profusely. Francis is awoken from his sleep late at night after a bad dream to find his wife, Margaret, is gone. When she returns to the tent she claims she was out getting â€Å"a breath of air† but Francis knew she had just slept with Robert Wilson. Francis†¦show more content†¦Margot seemed distraught in the story and said â€Å"I wish it hadn’t happened. Oh, I wish it hadn’t happened† (2). She went to her tent and appeared to be crying because her shoulders were shaking. Francis’ cowardice makes him less of a man in Margaret’s eyes than he already was, putting an even bigger strain on their marriage and opening the door to infidelity with Wilson who is painted as a strong male character throughout the story. Wilson thinks to himself in the story â€Å"Well, why doesn’t he keep his wife where she belongs? What does he think I am, a bloody plaster saint? Let him keep her where she belongs. It’s his own fault† (12). Hemingway uses this line to display the idea that a man can’t control his own urges and he has to keep his wife in check with his own actions. Wilson takes no responsibility for the infidelity and blames it all on Francis’ cowardice. If Francis had shown courage in this moment it could have reignited the passion in Francis and Margaret’s marriage rather than put an unnecessary strain on it further complicating their dichotomy. He should have been the brave man his wife needed to see providing for her so she could feel some sense of passion with him. Hemingway also seems to want to show us that a man needs to have a sense of adventure. If Francis had more of a sense of adventure like Robert Wilson his wife would’ve been less likely to cheat on him.
